A Dog Friendly Bed and Breakfast in Gillingham, Dorset
We love animals and are happy to welcome you and your well-behaved, house trained dogs (maximum, two) to our dog friendly North Dorset bed and breakfast. We have our own dog, spayed spaniel cross collie Peggy, who is extremely friendly and who loves to meet other canine friends; we also have a very chilled and laid back cat who is sufficiently dog savvy to know to keep out of their way.
However, if your dog is reactive to other dogs, just let us know and we’ll keep Peggy in our own part of the house. Peggy is also very friendly towards children and often gets name checked in our guest book!
Feedback from Gary and Pat – July 2017:
“We have just returned from a seven night stay at ‘Sunflowers’ with our two spaniels and we can’t recommend it highly enough. The reception from Cleo and Steve was fantastic, with tea and cookies in the garden with Peggy, to relax after the journey. The room was fabulous with everything you could wish for and immaculate. We had early 7 am starts, for a Dog Agility show [at the Gillingham & Shaftesbury Showground], on the first three days and Cleo did us a great breakfast “to go” to set us up. The rest of the week, the breakfasts were so good that we hardly ate at lunchtime and today’s was exceptional and topped off a fabulous week. We are hoping to come back to the same show in the future and will head straight back to ‘Sunflowers’. Thank you Cleo, Steve and Peggy for a fab holiday.”
Our preferred dog-friendly pubs and cafes are listed in the Eating and Drinking section and marked *
And there are lots of great places to go around here for both on and off lead walks. We regularly walk Peggy for 3-5 miles in the immediate vicinity and are happy to recommend some routes for you.
If you want to drive somewhere and then walk: Alfred’s Tower is surrounded by woods and is good for dogs who like to sniff; the grounds of Stourhead House permit dogs between 4 and 6pm each day or all day during December, January and February; and Shearwater Lake (in the direction of Warminster and Longleat) is excellent for both humans and their dogs. We also enjoy walks with Peggy at nearby Duncliffe Woods and Win Green and are happy to give you directions to either. Our favourite pub, the Ship Inn at West Stour, is also opposite a lovely field which is nice for a pre or post pub visit stretch of the legs (and paws).
Please discuss your dogs with us when you book – advance notice is a must. We make a charge of £5.00 per dog per night, payable in advance as part of your booking.
We reserve the right to make a holding charge of £100.00 per stay for visits involving two dogs and/or for one dog for more than one night. This will be refunded to your card post check out once the room(s) have been checked for damage to our floorings and furnishings. Damage caused by dogs will be charged at cost in order to cover additional cleaning and/or the replacement of damaged items.
If you’d like us to dog sit or walk your pet while you go out, we can discuss that as a separate arrangement. Daily day care rates are available from £15 per dog.
Feedback from Luke: “Wow! What a fantastic place to stay and brilliant hosts! First up, the house: immaculately clean and very comfortable. We also had a lot of great advice on dog friendly restaurants nearby (the Coppleridge Inn was very good). As we have an elderly dog that can be a bit grumpy with other dogs, Cleo ensured that her lovely dog, Peggy, was segregated from our dog – which was a very nice touch.” (Repeat guests, 2016 and 2017)
Feedback from Suzanne: “A warm and beautiful place to stay. Thank you for accommodating Casper’s needs whilst I attended my training course; I felt as if I could relax knowing that he was having a great time too! Breakfasts were also delicious, especially the parfait!” (a 4 night stay including dog sitting: November 2017)
