    Welcome to Cafe Newt

Located in the stunning, listed Old Brewery Building on Wyke Road – Café Newt is at the rear of the property and is the in-house café for the motorcycle MotoCorsa dealership, home to some beautiful and rare motorcycles. Even if you’re not into bikes, the space is fantastic and is a stunning backdrop for a wide range of motorbikes, clothing and vintage biking artefacts.

  • We can give you directions on how to find the café – it’s an easy walk, drive or motorbike ride from ‘Sunflowers’.
  • The café is run by Steve and he and his team are very friendly and helpful, with a smile for everyone.

    Flat white? Yes, please.

The coffees are great! Like us, Steve is a big fan of local produce, so you can enjoy our delicious local coffee (seen here in a flat white) as supplied by Gillingham firm 918 Coffee.

  • There’s a wide range of Specials and you can enjoy sandwiches, cakes, soups and other hot lunch options.
  • Plus gluten-free bread, cakes and soya milk are on offer.
  • It’s dog friendly! Your canine friend is welcome in the conservatory area at the back of the café and in the garden too. And Steve’s team will even offer Fido (or Peggy, in my case) a doggy treat upon arrival.
  • There are colouring sheets and crayons for the mini-visitors ….
  • And lots of books and magazines about bikes for the motorcyclists.

PS: yes, we are a dog friendly B&B!

Finally – our guests can enjoy a free Americano coffee or a cup of tea when they visit Café Newt: we’ve been supplied with some free vouchers (Peggy is guarding them) which are here for you if you let us know that you fancy a trip to Café Newt during your stay. Available until 20th April 2018, whilst our stocks last.

  • PS: It’s called Café Newt because there’s a rare and protected colony of newts in the pond at the rear of the property. All of the building work at MotoCorsa was done in order to preserve and secure their habitat.

Planning a trip to Gillingham, Dorset? Take a look at our events calendar

Today we launch our local calendar page of forthcoming events and activities, aimed at helping you plan your trip to this beautiful corner of north Dorset.  If,  like Suzanne who left us this feedback, you’re also looking for a reason to come and stay at ‘Sunflowers’, then take a peep at the calendar,  which features details and links to events in Dorset, Somerset and Wiltshire.

Cleo made us feel incredibly welcome in her beautiful home. There’s not one thing she hadn’t thought of. Would thoroughly recommend and am thinking of a reason to return to Gillingham so we can stay again!

We’ll be updating the calendar throughout the year,  so if you don’t see something which appeals or if the dates don’t work for you,  keep checking back to see what’s been added.

2016 Winner!

We do already have guests booked in at various points right the way through to October 2017, so please don’t miss out if you do fancy attending the Gillingham and Shaftesbury Show on 16th August or the incredibly popular (and totally brilliant, award winning) Sturminster Newton Cheese Festival on 9th and 10th September, to name but two of the events for which we were fully booked last year.

And – as huge foodies ourselves,  we know that attending Dorset’s amazing food and drink festivals is as much about what you buy to take home with you as it is about tasting the lovely local produce when you’re there.  So if you do go to any of the food festivals,  we’ll be happy to store your shopping safely in the fridge until you check out and/or provide you with plates, glasses and tableware if you want to have a picnic here. Just ask!

Many of the events are dog friendly

Please check out the calendar, decide what sounds fun and then contact us to book. We look forward to chatting soon.

On a favourite local eating spot

wp-1479763153517.jpgToday I walked past local restaurant South Street Kitchen and snapped this picture as I did so.  It’s one of our favourite places to eat and drink here in Gillingham and is just a short walk from the house;  this of course makes it very popular with guests who fancy trying one of SSK’s legendary cocktails or who are in the area without a car due to arriving by train, bicycle or foot!

I saw the SSK team comment on Instagram today that they’re now doing certain menu items (burgers, I think) to takeaway,  so I must find out more about this and see if they have menus that I can share with our guests.  Jane and Terry who stayed here last week came home raving about the delicious pulled pork and squid and chorizo dishes they had at SSK – I need to make a booking and call in again myself!

Check out where else we recommend that you eat and drink when you’re staying with us – there are some absolutely fabulous pubs and restaurants in the area.
